Eats: Xiang Fu Xiang Cheng Restaurant at Scott Garden

I was recently recommended a Chinese restaurant at Scott Garden Mall. My friend mentioned that it has pretty decent chinese food. Hell yeah I'm always game to try good chinese restaurants.

For those unfamiliar with Scott Garden, it has a weird combination of drinking joints and restaurants. For example, to get to this restaurant, we had to walk pass the Beer Factory (yes even their signage screams the drink).  Get this. We had to walk around this pub's open smoking area. Yup. As me and hubs each held the chickadee's hands to hurry her by, I can see other adults trying to unwind over a drink. I can see g-u-i-l-t on some of their faces probably for taking time out from family while I'm thinking "gawd I could do with a drink". Lose - lose.

Anyways, before I went to the restaurant, I didn't realize this "chinese" restaurant is actually of Hunan origins. That's new. What is Hunan food I asked myself. Well, their food is generally hot and spicy. They have a wide variety of delicacies which is in line with its locality along the middle reaches of the Yangtze river. Fried tripe slivers, trip in duck's web soup, dried scallop and egg-whites are all part of their menu. (Thanks google)

Indeed, this restaurant has dish items which is just that. I did not manage to take pictures of these different dishes. I was too freakin busy going through each item to choose "edible dishes" for the chickadee and the hubs.

I need to have a word with my friend who recommended this.

Fortunately for him, there were some "normal" items on the menu.

Each snack costs RM3. Pretty pricey for something in a sauce dish

These were placed on our table when we sat down. I thought they were free until the bill came. I wonder if these can be politely declined. But if you are starved, these are alright while waiting for your food.

Safe Dish 1: Sweet & Sour Pork RM22

Safe Dish 2: Claypot Traditional Toufu RM18

Pretty standard stuff

Safe Dish 3: Spinach Cooked in Soup RM18

Not too good. Kinda bland.

I wasn't too impressed with the food. But to be fair, I suppose it's because we did not order their exotic specialties.

The thing I like about this restaurant is the fact that they were prepared to please the kids.

A basket of toys came the same time as the snacks. Check it out. There were even ice age figurines from McDonalds. The Chickadee had the chance to play with a number of Happy Meal toys in one sitting without having to actually eat a Happy Meal.

They do however have limited baskets. The chickadee was a bit taken aback when a waitress came to grab a couple of "her" toys from "her" basket to pass to another new kid in the restaurant. Yes. Kids and possessions. That's another story.

Overall this place is really not our cup of tea. I can't even pronounce the restaurant's name; which by the way means "assisting each other and complementing each other". But if you are game for some Hunan food adventure, you will be spoilt with choices here.
