I can't believe it but the little Chickadee actually dipped her roti canai* in dahl when we went for our morning breakfast at our neighborhood mamak eatery last weekend.
My reaction was to wait for her reaction while quietly panicking inside. (yes I am very protective of my one legacy). But she loved it! The dahl dipped roti was immediately followed by a gulp of water. But she did it again ..and again.
So my gen x genes made me look up dahl to find out what it is made of exactly. I know there are peas. But seeing that the little chick is now eating them, obviously I need to know the breakdown of the ingredients.
According to Wikipedia ~ Dahl (or Dal or Daal) is a preparation of pulses (dried lentils, peas or beans) which have been stripped of their outter hulls and split. It also refers to the thick stew prepared from these pulses. Dal is a ready source of protein for a balanced diet containing little or no meat.
From the recipes I see, the ingredients could be a mixture (not all listed) of dahl, turmeric, salt, tomatoes, tamarind, unripe mango, cumin seeds, cardamom, ginger, cilantro, onion
Phew. Sounds good.
(And yes of course I know what is in a roti canai as well, which is mainly flour, ghee and water. Ghee is the fat in the roti. But I'm not too fussed as the chickadee is as active as the next toddler)
For being such a little Malaysian champion, we ordered a milo kosong ice for her.
As my previous article, being Malaysian is to indulge in Malaysian food. I cant wait to let her try assam laksa!
* To my foreign readers, Roti is a wheat-based flat bread
