Yes. I am a Penang Lang and mighty pleased to be one.
Because of my Gen x childhood in Penang, our little hybrid will have the chance to bask in all things local and wonderful in that little island gem.
With everyone sitting up and taking notice of my once laid back hometown, the little one's childhood memory of Penang will definitely be different from mine.
It seems like Penang has gone through a major makeover. It has upgraded its clothes, piled on make up, decked up with jewelry, but under it all, it's still good ol' Penang. The essence that is Penang has not changed. The island still radiates from its old tradition and culture. So much so that it is in fact now a Unesco World Heritage Site! Who cares if the pin is bigger than the island on the map? We are now 1 out of 759 Unesco cultural sites around the globe. Well done Penang Langs! Well done indeed.
Sometimes, shielding away modern changes and standing by your history has its own rewards. I for one am thankful for the people in Penang for holding on to the Gen x memory of old Penang, I would love for my daughter to learn a bit more about how I came about.
